Showcasing and Sharing Student Scholarship: UBC’s cIRcle Promotes Student Success and Electronic Learning

Title: Showcasing and Sharing Student Scholarship: UBC’s cIRcle Promotes Student Success and Electronic Learning

Presenters: Hilde Colenbrander, cIRcle Coordinator, UBC Library
Julia Thompson, Digital Library Assistant, UBC Library

Description: As the Open Access movement grows around the world, more and more post-secondary institutions are creating information/institutional repositories (IRs) in an effort to preserve scholarly content and to present their academic achievements to the world. However, many universities focus primarily on recruiting faculty work, graduate theses, and doctoral dissertations. Undergraduate papers and projects are absent from many of these IRs.

UBC’s Information Repository, cIRcle, is comparatively unique in its effort to recruit both faculty and quality student work. With the support of a grant from UBC’s Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund, cIRcle employs a graduate student to seek non-thesis student content and to educate students about issues of copyright, scholarly publishing, and open access.

cIRcle offers students a great opportunity to showcase their scholarly achievements.

By contributing content to cIRcle, students can inspire new ideas and promote student learning as they electronically collaborate and share information with peers, faculty, alumni, and people around the world. cIRcle provides a unique, UBC-authenticated and preserved URL to each scholarly document, allowing students to showcase their work via e-portfolios, blogs, social networking sites, and resumes as they pursue grad-school and employment opportunities.
