Building Online Communities to Support Community Service Learning Initiatives at UBC

Title: Building Online Communities to Support Community Service Learning Initiatives at UBC

Presenters: Danielle Blond, Coordinator, Communities of Practice, UBC Community Learning Initiative
Catherine Paul, Community of Practice Facilitator, Office of Learning Technology

Description: In Spring of 2009 the UBC Learning Exchange/UBC-Community Learning Initiative began a pilot project in partnership with the Office of Learning Technology to explore building online learning communities. These communities would serve to connect those involved in Community Service Learning (CSL) at UBC. The goal was to help strengthen the networks of CSL practitioners at UBC, and provide a place where they could share resources and learn from each other. Through the use of participatory methods and Web 2.0 tools, a site was collaboratively designed with UBC staff and graduate students who acted as Project Leaders in CSL. This Project Leader site is now up and running and being used by current Project Leaders.

We look forward to sharing how this site came about, the growth that has happened and how the CSL practitioners are responding to this new online community.
